The Birth Story

This very moment of our lives is one of the most special of all....we hope it's memory will last forever.

That sounds soooo cheesy, but we could think all day and not find a better way to say what we feel. We are so full of joy at the results of the things which proceeded during the last 72 hours. They certainly did not go as planned, but they progressed with a peace that is indescribable.

On Wednesday I started having contractions, although they were very irregular. By the end of the day we were a little disappointed to be going to bed as usual. By 5 in the morning on Thursday the contractions seemed like they were finally in a rhythm, so I started timing them. They averaged 50 seconds long at 8 minutes apart for the next several hours. So we got cpc over to the H family's house, notified Grams she could go ahead and catch a flight, and pmc spent the rest of the day being the BEST labor coach I could have asked for. Throughout the day my contractions remained rhythmic, but I would go back and forth from having them long and close together, to shorter and more spread out. By 4pm we just couldn't figure out what my body was doing so we called the doctor's office. They decided it was best that I just go ahead and get checked at the hospital......because 11 hours of solid labor was clearly something.

Well, at the hospital I was diagnosed as 2 cm dilated, 100% effaced and a -2 station, but not in "active labor" because my contractions were not causing rapid enough dilation. Most of me was relieved to be told I could just go home, because I was NOT pleased by the nurse and the midwife on call. Pmc gave me a blessing before we left the hospital, and 4 hours after getting there we finally left to go home in a pretty bad snowstorm. We recouped a bit, ate some dinner, and pmc continued to coach me through contractions like a pro. But soon thereafter my body switched gears again and my contractions averaged 90 seconds at 3 1/2 minutes apart. After over an hour of this we decided I must be making some progress and headed back to the hospital around 2am, minutes before Grams arrived at our house.

At the hospital we were faced with mostly the same story, although pmc kept sticking up for me. We just wanted the nurses to understand that I needed to get settled somewhere so my body didn't have to keep adjusting to the surroundings. I was 3 cm now, and even though the nurses seemed grim, somehow someone was finally convinced and decided to admit me. By 4am I realized that I was approaching 24 hours, and was frustrated with my lack of progress, and the fact that my midwife was apparently not on call all weekend. We decided to ask the nurse what pain relief options she thought my midwife might suggest at that point. The nurse cheerfully suggested that she would likely give some Demarol to take off the edge so I could get some rest and get back to work with the contractions in a few hours. She also pointed out that although the midwife was not on-call, there was a chance that Friday was her regular day and would be in around 8am. So with high hopes of more support, I got the Demarol and fell asleep. By 8am I was re-energized and breathing through contractions like a champ again! My midwife DID arrive, and I felt like everything was going to progress just fine. Everyone kept reminding me we'd have a baby by the end of the day, so my spirits were up and I nearly forgot I'd been in labor so long! Pmc felt the same way.

However as the afternoon started to progress I was getting worn out again, and the contractions were becoming so painful I was not coping well. Around 3pm my midwife checked my cervix again and I was still only 5-6cm, 95% effaced, and -2 station. I got in the shower again and the contractions simply became too much for me to bear. I started yelling at people, and expressing that I just couldn't do this anymore. Inside I felt like something must be wrong. Pmc and the midwife assistant kept trying to coach me through contractions, but I just started getting mad at them. But my midwife came in and said either I must be transitioning, or something was wrong.

So I got out and they checked me again, but my cervix had still made no progress. Well, my midwife was the wise one to figure out that my dermoid cyst was in the way and preventing the baby's head from coming down into the birth canal. So they tried breaking my waters and having me push to see if I could push his head over the cyst. At this point, my cyst became hardened and it was clear that it was twisting on the fallopian tube and causing excessive pain. I was now yelling at everyone! But the worst part was that this is when the baby's heart rate dropped drastically, to around 70bpm. It took a few minutes to determine that yes, in fact, that was his heart rate and not mine. My doctor, who had joined this circus at some point unknown to me, leaned over me and said "we're going to have to do a c-section." I think everyone in the room was surprised when I happily responded with "okay." I think I had already felt this coming back in the shower, and had felt peace about it. I knew I was in good hands. I only had a momentary lapse right before they took me to the operating room where I asked if it was my fault, wondering if I had given up or if the pain wasn't really as bad as I was thinking it was.

Pmc on the other hand (who is now at work, and I am going to try to write the things he told me for him) had thought as I got out of the shower that I was giving up. I had never expressed to him my sense that something was wrong, and so he was worried that I would later feel I had given up. As he was given scrubs to change into, he felt so many different things - worry, fear, sadness, but overriding them all was loneliness.

Things were pretty simple after that. I was rushed off to the operating room, this time in a much more "emergency" fashion that my first c-section. The danger was real this time and we could feel it. They started cutting into my belly before pmc had even come into the room. I was worried about him and kept asking for him. When he finally came in, they wouldn't even let him watch at first. They pulled out the baby seconds later, and let pmc stand and start snapping pictures. Things were pretty chaotic. At first I didn't hear cdc cry, and started to worry. But once they cut the umbilical cord he cried and I knew he was going to be just fine. They removed my cyst (and my right ovary) and I kept hearing "no wonder that baby couldn't get down into the birth canal." As the doctors did their thing inside my body, pmc came over and talked with me. He looked so worried about me, so I reassured him about how I knew this was okay and felt peace....and suddenly I could see the peace wash over him like a wave. Then the joy of having another child finally hit us both! We had our little cdc, and everything was okay.

Pmc attended to cdc with the doctor's while I begged for warm blankets to help me to stop shivering. I liked this c-section much more than the first, because I didn't feel pain as they were putting me all back together and sewing me up. I still don't know the whole story because I haven't met with my doctor again yet, but apparently they had to remove a bunch of scar tissue from the first c-section or something. They checked, and there was no cyst on my other ovary!

Finally they took off all the surgery paraphernalia and took me into the recovery room to see my baby. Cdc was doing some grunting, so they had him under the heat lamp. I kept asking for him to come to my chest, and the nurses seemed to think it was more important to keep him under the lamp. Finally my midwife came in and said it would be good for him to come to my chest, so the nurses submitted. Immediately he found my breast and started eating, and his grunting went right away!

As Pmc sat there with our new son, we discussed the peace we both felt. We were so grateful to have had the experience of "natural labor," even though it didn't end the way we hoped. We learned so much! I learned that I like natural labor MUCH more than with an epidural, even if it was for 35 hours. If it ends without a c-section I'd do it again over and over. Why you ask? Well...for one, I'm being completely honest when I say I had LESS pain than during my first labor. On top of that, it felt good knowing that my body and my baby's body were not getting a huge dose of drugs for hours at a time. I also really liked feeling like I knew what was going on in my body the whole time. We were also so grateful that we had the best doctor and midwife we could have asked for. We had so much confidence that they had tried their very hardest to get this baby here without needing to cut me open, but also that they really knew when a c-section was medically necessary. Which leads to my final point.....and that is that we are so grateful to have had medical technology available to us when it was so clear that we really needed it. Cdc and I are both here, safe and healthy, because of this c-section. I do not think either one of us would still be here without it. I am grateful for the peace my Heavenly Father has given to our family, and the blessing of life. I am filled with joy just thinking about our little family of four.

So, to give the final details: Cdc was 7 lbs. 9 oz. and 21 inches long (that is the same length that cpc was, but a pound less!). He was born January 29, 2010 at 4:21pm. He is a sweet, skinny, cuddly newborn with BLONDE BLONDE hair and eyelashes. He has my forehead wrinkles, no widow's peak, and fontanelle's on his skull that really stand out (in fact they're even still separated on his forehead!). He has big feet and hands, but not necessarily long fingers & toes. He has a little mouth and a sweet, quiet cry. We are SO pleased to have him in our family! Cdc is named after our mission president and my paternal grandfather, two people we admire and respect and love so much.

I am recovering very well, just like the first time. I am so grateful to have Grams here, who has taken such good care of our whole family. We will be so sad to see her go on Thursday!

And I think the only details we have left to share for now are.....PICTURES!!!!!

Delicious Life

Well, we're once again a few days behind, but we're slowly catching up. School is getting underway for pmc (harder than anticipated...ugh). The classes he's taking are Children & Families Across Cultures, Research Methods, and Work & Families. That part's okay, it's the assistantship that is the challenge. Two hours a week in lecture with the professor, then teaching six hour-long discussions each week is kicking his behind! Most of the headache simply comes from dealing with 127 students........and when we say headache, we mean literally. Last week he had TWO migraines which were NOT brought on by exercise, which has not happened in years. He even thinks one of the migraines was actually two combined into one (don't ask me, I don't get it either!).

Cpc and I are busy at home, trying to make sure every little thing is ready for cdc's arrival. I think we have the freezer well-stocked, and I've cleaned just about everything. I even found time to make some yummy bread to spread our hand-picked home-made raspberry jam across.

I'm grateful Santa Claus had the foresight to bring cpc some dum-dum's to distract him for ten minutes at a time while I get some work done.

On the other hand, cpc has been VERY helpful, and I actually mean that! Tonight he was thrilled at the chance to make French Toast with Daddy. He gets the biggest grin on his face when Dad gets cpc's apron down and puts his own on - that's the sign that something fun is about to happen.

He is such a sweetheart, we can hardly get over how much he loves us and wants to do the right things. Maybe that's why he isn't a good sleeper. He actually skipped his nap altogether today. It's so hard on me when I can tell how hard he is trying to fall asleep at nap-time, but just can't seem to do it. He will lay in bed quiet for 20 minutes before finally starting to whine. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether he simply took a 20 minute nap, or just really didn't sleep.

In other news, we switched back to the toddler bed; NOT by choice. Cpc decided that even a full crib rail wasn't going to keep him in bed a few nights ago, and made the fateful jump. THUD! It was a loud one. We decided we didn't want to hear it again, even if that meant that he could slip right out of bed. The transition isn't going TOO badly though.

Cpc is pretty excited about all the baby stuff. He loves to put "baby" tigger in the swing and turn on the music for him.
And while I do all my little household chores, the boys keep themselves plenty busy with cpc's marble run. This one went all the way down the stairs, including around the corner.
And I'm just now realizing that we never did take a prego picture this week. Speaking of prego....I'm also progressing in some way with labor. I've been having contractions all day, but nothing real regular....so we'll just keep waiting. Hopefully we can still get a good final picture tomorrow, and hopefully it really will be a final picture! We sure can hardly wait to have this little guy finally join the family!

Not-so-deep Deep Thoughts

I can't believe it, but it is actually 1:00am. I haven't stayed up this late in a LONG time. Not that I haven't been up this late with a crying kid recently. But tonight is different. Tonight I'm choosing, minute after minute NOT to go to bed. There is something intriguing to me tonight about being up all alone in our quiet house. I am relishing it now, but I'm sure when 7:30am rolls around with a wide-awake kid I'm going to be regretting it. Pmc had a strange onset of a migraine tonight, and cpc is sleeping soundly, so I suddenly feel compelled to get stuff done on the computer that I never find time for during the day. That includes blogging! So how about I tell you about the beginning of our year?

The first 12 days were spent in Utah. We rung in the new year with Hco and family by playing games and making lots of noise. Then, although our anniversary is January 3rd, we celebrated our 3rd anniversary before Christmas because we were offered a free night at a hotel (thanks to pmc's dad!). I cannot express how blessed I am to be married to pmc, and celebrating 3 full years together just made me giddy! We had pmc's high school friends up to the cabin just after the New Year, and then spent some family time there just the three of us after they left. Cpc could hardly get enough of the snowmobile.

We especially enjoyed some quality time with Sdc over the break, and his girlfriend (whom I'm a fan of since she's an Aggie!).
And honestly, I don't really recall everything we did the last few days. We just tried to cram in seeing as many of the people we love as possible. We did go to the zoo, which was fun to do in winter. Cpc loved it. We were disappointed though that we didn't get to see the baby elephant.

I do know that it was hard to say goodbye again, but we were also ready to get back to our own space....and I was definitely ready to have my routine back.

When we arrived home to Syracuse, we had our looooooong driveway to shovel. Which pmc did without any complaint.

Cpc has been happy to be home with his own toys, books and bed. He hasn't readjusted to sleeping as well as we thought he might, but he has readjusted nevertheless.
And while we noted in the last post his resemblance of Mr. Mint, I think it's clear here that he's related to Huck Finn. I'd like to put in a little bubble above his head there that says "you really think you're going to get me into that bathtub?" Although, he actually LOVES the bath.

And now, I'd just like to share some of the thoughts on my mind, which I feel have been building up for so long I am sure I've lost half of them.

We had a grand trip, and I loved being around family and friends. It was great to see how much I really did miss our families, and for them to point out how much cpc has changed and grown. I also discovered though that I am a homebody of sorts. I LOVE being home in my own house, and having our own routine, and being a homemaker! I love planning our meals, and working on projects around the house. I love having cpc all to myself to play with and teach all day long. I love having pmc all to myself in the mornings and evening to talk and cuddle with. Therefore it was good for us to get out and do something different. We grew to appreciate these things so much more, and learned a lot by not having them. Cpc sure became better at sharing and dealing with chaos.

And now that we're back home, there are some things I'm absolutely loving. I have COMPLETELY hit the "nesting" phase of this pregnancy, and have a to-do list a mile long of things to prepare for the baby. Cpc has returned to potty-training, which is going very well, although I wouldn't say we're directly on the path to giving up diapers. Pmc has returned to school and is facing all that stress with much enthusiasm. We've finally completed our goals for the year, and are loving the direction they are giving us! I think we're all starting to feel confident that we're as prepared as we can be for another addition to the family. So now we just get to wait for this little angel to join us, and then brace ourselves for all the lessons we have yet to learn!

So Long Aughts

I really don't care what anyone else says... this decade will be labeled by TLCF as the aughts. By now you all ought to know what that means.
My personal 10 best experiences in the '00's were (in no particular order):
Getting Married
Becoming a Father
Serving a Mission
Traveling across the East Coast
Graduating High School
Graduating College
Wow, I just realized that I was still at Evergreen Junior High when the decade began. I think that ends the list abruptly right there... All of the biggest decision of my life happened in the aughts. Sweet.

As for me (atec), I also spent the decade becoming an adult...however, I did not start the decade in Junior High, that's for sure! I did graduate high school and college, serve a mission, get married, and become a mom. Now I guess I get to spend the next decade dating my husband, and bearing and rearing children. I personally couldn't ask for better!

So, we spent the end of the year in Utah! We had a blast seeing all the people we love and have missed so much. We crammed in quite a bit in our 4 weeks there, but we'll just cover through the end of 2009 in this post.

The night before we flew out, as we were packing, we discovered we had some fun Christmas shirts for pmc and cpc.

Then, just after putting cpc to bed, we opened the closet to pull out our luggage. We were very unpleasantly surprised to find this:

along with 3 empty granola bar wrappers from our emergency kit. Luckily I had had my suspicions of mice for a week or so, so we had already purchased mice traps to leave while we were gone.

The first item of business upon arriving in Salt Lake was the annual Eyre-Greene Christmas dinner. The food was good, but the company was better.

We were excited to have Aunt Bmem and her family arrive in town just in time! Cpc especially enjoyed wearing the hand-me-down outfit from his dad, in combination with the new hat and mittens from Momsey. See any resemblance?

Yep that's our son. He also rather enjoyed doing a dance which thoroughly entertained all his relatives! Pmc commented at the time that he looked like the peppermint dude from Candyland...a quick google search confirmed our suspicions. The similarities are striking, too bad he had already eaten the candy-cane Aunt Cse gave him earlier!

We spent the next few days making our Christmas presents for the Cundick cousins. We really enjoyed working on this little project together, and think we have perfected the art of making in-tune chimes.

Our next project will be creating a song-book for said chimes.

Also on our list of things to do in Utah was visit friends with new babies. Cpc was more than thrilled at this. The first actual baby he held was less than 2 weeks old and under 7 pounds. He was so excited, but perfectly well-mannered holding little Bnb. After he had held her for about 5 minutes, I figured he was done and took her from his arms. This did not produce pretty results. Once I realized he still wanted to hold her, he did so calmly for 5 more minutes before deciding he was done. I think he'll be pretty excited for his new brother in the coming weeks, at least at first!

Christmas Day was a new adventure for all of us, seeing as we were 2,000 miles from home, which meant that all our big gifts were left behind. It actually turned out well because the day stayed low-key for us - although Cpc clearly found plenty of Christmas joy with the smaller, simpler gifts he opened that morning at Grams and Papa's!

After breakfast (including the Cundick tradition of Finnan Haddie), we headed up to Bear Lake to join Atec's family. The lake was a sight for sore eyes - Bear Lake is one of the Utah things that we miss the most out here. It was so picturesque and Christmassy about 1PM... just see for yourself:

Cpc particularly enjoyed being doted on by his loving cousins, who just couldn't get enough of him. Since Lmze had to stay in South Dakota with her little sister, cpc was the only one to dote on!

We stayed around Bear Lake until Sunday morning, when we headed for Narnia (aka the Cundick Cabin), where we enjoyed a few days with Pmc's family. Cpc still received much doting here, although he also received his fair share of learning to share and such things as happen when there are more children closer to his age. We particularly enjoyed getting out on family walks and seeing the beauty frozen Utah!

Our final thoughts for the year include:

The first semester of grad school went as well as we could have hoped for. Living on student loans, though not what we planned, has taught us a lot about how we choose to spend our money. It is easy to find the daily joys of parenting, but it must be done consciously. You may have to grow old, but you don't have to grow up (entirely). The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the answer to every concern, and the cause of every joy in life!

And that's about it folks! Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
